20150111_122246 (1)Paul Schmitz II recently gave a presentation to a group of medics during their drill weekend for the Missouri National Guard. The intent was to help these young medics see their role on the battle field more clearly and to motivate them during training.

The photo is of the recent Goose Hunt that Paul Schmitz SR (in tan coveralls) and Paul Schmitz II (next to his father in head to toe camo) attended. The event was a great success!

Below is the write up for Paul Schmitz’s speech.

FEW member and retired SSG Paul Schmitz II volunteered to share his story with Missouri National Guard combat medics. SSG Schmitz deployed to Iraq during the early phases of the war and was part of the initial push from Kuwait to Mosul, and was wounded by enemy fire. Paul wanted to impress upon the medics of the 206th Area Support Medical Company, Springfield, MO the importance of their training and how they are relied upon in a combat situation. It is crucial that the medics know their job, their equipment and their Soldiers to effectively render aid when needed. In relating the circumstances of his injuries and treatment, Paul brought realism and needed perspective, especially to the younger medics who have never deployed. The emotion in his voice was noticeable. He spoke of the close critical bond that must develop between the medic and those he/she supports. Paul’s goal in doing this was to keep the medics focused and motivated, and help put themselves in the battle-mindset and be better able to “train as we fight”. Unit medics were engaged during Paul’s talk and asked several questions around his injuries and battlefield conditions in general, and he stayed to answer each one making sure they fully understood his answers. The unit First Sergeant and Physicians Assistant (PA) were very impressed, recognizing the need for veterans who have “been there , done that” to help train and prepare the next generation. Afterwards, Paul and his family (names) toured the armory and Paul’s wife even got to sit in a new up-armored Humvee while Paul explained how the vehicle and it’s systems worked. She loved it!

Veterans like Paul who are willing to give of their time and emotions for the benefit of current Soldiers are invaluable. His continuing dedication and passion for our military is obvious and greatly appreciated! The MOGUARD hopes to expand this initiative and enlist more FEW veterans to speak at armories across the state.
