Darren Unruh and his wonderful staff at the Deep Fork National Wildlife Refuge hosted some Exceptional Warriors to an amazing deer hunt. Hunting the normally restricted hardwood bottoms, which are managed superbly, was a rare opportunity. The Warriors had several opportunities to harvest deer. After a close call on a great wall-hanger buck in the morning, Jim, a combat wounded Vietnam Veteran and Silver Star recipient, scored his first ever deer, a nice doe.
The lodging and meals were provided through “The Friends of Deep Fork” with the cooperation and goodwill of local vendors. Best Western, El Charro and the highlight was dinner at Ike’s where the restaurant squashed the entire tab, not only for the vets but for all guests of the “friends”. What a great meal and to be topped off with such generosity is unforgettable.
Great fellowship, hosts, food, dog tired hunters and MVP David “Woody” Woodruff to assist with escorting one of the vets, and bringing his usual enthusiasm and depth of knowledge to round the trip out to its immanent success. Thank you all!
