Cowboy mounted shooting is the fastest growing equestrian sport in America. The FEW is proud to sponsor introductory courses to this growing sport which is family fun for the novice or seasoned rider. The FEW participants can bring their own equipment and introduce their horse and themselves to the sport or seasoned horses and equipment can be provided for the session. The sessions can be custom tailored or are typically 1-2 days, location and rider experience level dependent. Come on out with your family and enjoy this fun and exciting sport.
For FEW Warriors, this challenging sport equates to a combat marksmanship stress fire course conducted while on horseback. It will challenge your horsemanship, communication, decision making skills and marksmanship. Mounted participants compete in this fast action timed event using two .45 caliber single action revolvers, each loaded with five rounds of specially prepared blank ammunition capable of breaking the ten reactionary target balloons in sequence while completing the designated pattern or stage. There is also a competition rifle or shotgun class where contestants use one .45 caliber single action revolver and either a .45 caliber lever action rifle or approved cowboy action double barreled shotgun.
Walking, trotting or racing through challenging courses that include elements of wild west action, barrel racing, and pole bending the shooter with the fastest time and fewest missed targets wins. Each miss is a five second penalty. This fast paced sport combines teamwork and horsemanship between rider and one’s mount. Any breed of horse, mule or pony may be used, but its suggested the animal be introduced to gunfire before attempting to compete with it.
Cowboy Mounted Shooting clubs are organized nationwide and welcome cowboy and cowgirl competitors of all ages and levels. Each club strives to make their events fun for the whole family. The sport of Cowboy Mounted Shooting, is promoted by two organizations, the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association and the Mounted Shooting Association. To even the playing field, both organizations have a variety of levels of competition for everyone ranging from novice levels to seasoned, sponsored professionals. The competition classes are broken into six levels for men and women respectively. There are also classes split by age group for the younger mounted shooters to help prepare them for upper levels of competition.
